Meet the CIOs of US News' top 22 hospitals unknown
IT chiefs for U.S. News & World Report's 2023-24 Best Hospitals Honor Roll have a range of backgrounds, with some coming from the clinical side and others having worked for EHR vendors like Cerner or tech companies such as Dell.
Here are the CIOs of the 22 hospitals on U.S. News' Honor Roll for '23-'24:
Jerry Fox. Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis).
Mr. Fox has been senior vice president and chief information and digital officer of BJC HealthCare since 2017. He leads IT, information security operations, biomedical engineering technology, and digital initiatives. He previously served as vice president and global CIO of industrial automation company Rockwell Automation.
Adam Landman, MD. Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston).
Dr. Landman is CIO, having joined Brigham and Women's in 2010 as director of clinical informatics in the department of emergency medicine. He is also an associate professor at Boston-based Harvard Medical School and an emergency physician.
Craig Kwiatkowski, PharmD. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles).
Dr. Kwiatkowski took over as senior vice president of enterprise information services and CIO of Cedars-Sinai in 2022, having worked in IT roles for the academic health system since 2009. He started his career as an inpatient pharmacist at University of Chicago Medicine.
Matthew Kull. Cleveland Clinic.
Mr. Kull became CIO in 2020, previously serving as associate CIO of the medical center's IT division. He started with Cleveland Clinic in 2018 and is a former senior vice president and CIO of Dallas-based Parkland Health.
Michael Restuccia. Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian (Philadelphia).
Mr. Restuccia, senior vice president and CIO, joined Penn Medicine in 2006. He has overseen the integration of telemedicine throughout the health system, advances in data analytics and precision medicine, and the deployment of Epic's integrated EHR.
Ken Letkeman. Houston Methodist Hospital.
Mr. Letkeman became senior vice president and CIO in 2018. He previously served as CIO of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System.
Richard Mendola, PhD. Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore).
Dr. Mendola joined Johns Hopkins Medicine and University as vice president and CIO in March. He served in a similar capacity for Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare and University since 2005. He has a PhD in psychology.
Keith Jennings, Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston).
Mr. Jennings has been CIO since 2011 and worked for the health system since 2001. He served in the U.S. Army for 11 years as a civil affairs officer and military police officer.
Cris Ross. Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.).
Mr. Ross has been with Mayo Clinic since 2012. He has helped converge the EHR enterprisewide and initiate innovation programs in data, analytics and machine learning. He previously served in CIO roles with CVS MinuteClinic and United Behavioral Health.
Kristin Myers. Mount Sinai Hospital (New York City).
Ms. Myers is executive vice president and chief digital and information officer, having started with Mount Sinai Health System in 2004 as director of the Epic clinical transformation group. She previously worked for Cerner.
Peter Fleischut, MD. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell (New York City).
Dr. Fleischut was named chief information and transformation officer of NewYork-Presbyterian in 2022. He has also served as chief innovation officer and chief medical operations officer in his 13 years there, after joining the health system from Weill Cornell. He manages enterprise IT, lab and pharmacy operations.
Sophy Lu. North Shore University Hospital at Northwell Health (Manhasset, N.Y.).
Ms. Lu became senior vice president and CIO of Northwell Health in 2022. She had previously served as chief applications officer there since 2017. She has also worked for EHR vendor Allscripts (now Veradigm) and tech company Siemens.
Doug King. Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago).
Mr. King is senior vice president and CIO at Northwestern Medicine. He provides strategy for technology initiatives, has responsibility for analytics and informatics, and helps lead the Northwestern Medicine Innovation Center. He has been with the organization since 2006.
Nader Mherabi. NYU Langone Hospitals (New York City).
Mr. Mherabi is executive vice president and chief digital and information officer, leading technology strategy for NYU Langone Health. He has worked in IT for the health system since 2004, having started his career with Mount Sinai Health System.
Jeff Gautney. Rush University Medical Center (Chicago).
Jeff Gautney joined Rush as senior vice president and CIO in 2021 from the health IT consulting world. He previously worked for Northwell Health and Dallas-based Baylor University Medical Center.
Michael Pfeffer, MD. Stanford Health Care-Stanford (Calif.) Hospital.
Dr. Pfeffer, who serves as CIO of Stanford Health Care and Stanford School of Medicine and an associate dean at the medical school, oversees technology and digital solutions. He joined the health system in 2021 after serving as CIO at UCLA Health for more than eight years.
Joshua Glandorf. UC San Diego Health-LaJolla and Hillcrest Hospitals.
Mr. Glandorf became CIO of UC San Diego Health in 2022, previously serving as senior director of information services. He has also worked as director of analytics at Stanford Children's in Palo Alto, Calif.
Ellen Pollack, MSN, RN. UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles).
Appointed in 2022, Ms. Pollack also serves as UCLA Health's chief nursing informatics officer. She has been with the health system since 1993, having previously been EHR deployment director and EHR inpatient clinical director.
Joe Bengfort. UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center (San Francisco).
Mr. Bengfort is also the senior vice president of IT and associate vice chancellor at UCSF and leads strategic IT initiatives for University of California Health. He joined UCSF in 2011, having worked for Dell for more than two decades.
Andrew Rosenberg, MD. University of Michigan Health-Ann Arbor.
Dr. Rosenberg was named the inaugural CIO of Michigan Medicine in 2017. He previously served as chief medical information officer and executive director of information and data management since 2010. He also worked as director of critical care for anesthesiology, director of clinical care research, and medical director of the cardiac surgical ICU.
Russell Poole. UT Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas).
Mr. Poole became vice president and information resources and CIO in 2020. He previously served as associate vice chancellor and CIO of UCHealth University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and worked in IT leadership for Atlanta-based Georgia Tech and Gainesville-based University of Florida.
Neal Patel, MD. Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, Tenn.).
Dr. Patel became CIO in 2019, having joined the medical center in 1997 as a pediatric critical care physician. He previously served as chief medical information officer. He is also a professor of clinical pediatrics and teaches anesthesiology and biomedical informatics.
