Thymia, the tech startup gamifying mental health support, has closed a $2.7m (£2m) seed round to further develop its product offering.
Founded in 2020, Thymia develops video games that are designed to track users’ mental health.
The company’s games analyse speech patterns, facial expressions and behaviour to measure symptoms of various conditions, with an emphasis on depression.
Thymia claims its gamified mental health diagnosis products make the work of clinicians faster and more accurate.
“Our mission at Thymia from day one has been to make mental health assessments faster, more objective and more reliable,” said Dr Emilia Molimpakis, co-founder and CEO of Thymia.
“Mental health is complex, but existing assessment methods fail to pick up on the billions of ways different mental health conditions can show up: something I know all too well following my experience with my best friend.”
Molimpakis was inspired to launch Thymia following her best friend’s struggle with depression throughout university. The founder said that doctors and psychiatrists at the time failed to see the severity of her condition.
“As a result, too many people go mis- or undiagnosed; or spiral before anyone realises it’s happening,” Molimpakis added.
“Our technology is revolutionary. By combining cutting-edge neuroscience and ethical, explainable AI, we have built a tool that can help people get an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan in place faster than ever before.”
The investment round was led by Kodori Ventures with participation from Entrepreneur First, Syndicate Room, Calm/Storm Ventures and Form Ventures.
Alexander Kuznetsov from Kodori Ventures said: “Kodori Ventures is proud to be backing the team at Thymia in their pioneering mental health work. With their recent expansion to four continents, they truly are a global force to be reckoned with in the field of mental health care, and I’m excited to see the impact of their work in the way we diagnose and understand mental health.”
The company previously raised £780,000 in an earlier round in June 2021.
