Dr Bertalan Meskó, PhD   Year-end summary: these 10 technologies will transform how care is delivered

Getting to the end of the year, it is time for a summary of how digital health progressed in 2022. It is easy to get lost in the noise – I have shared well over a thousand articles, studies and news items in 2022. Thus, I picked the 10 topics I believe will have the most significance in the future of healthcare.

And what's lying ahead? That was the theme of the last live Q&A of the year. If you're eager to learn about the key digital trends in medicine in 2023, check the video.

From digital therapeutics to virtual wards and drones saving lives, 2022 was nothing short of promising trends finding their way to the everyday reality of healthcare.

In the year-end summary, we covered 10 advancements that will stay with us in the unforeseeable future and change how care is delivered.

WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT?

The list highlights two distinct themes: the search for tools addressing the problems arising from the global shortage of healthcare workers, and a profound transformation of how, where and by whom care is delivered.

If we are looking for one common thing in healthcare systems around the world, it’s that nobody is truly satisfied with their own.

There are, however, excellent examples related to certain sub-segments. Let’s Berci Ocean the dream team, and imagine what healthcare would look like if we could combine all the best practices.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT?

With having focus and working for the right goals, it is possible to fully transform a country and its healthcare in just a few decades. Here's what to aim for.

What is going to happen in the future of medicine? What will healthcare look like? And how will our roles change as healthcare goes increasingly digital? Which digital health trends are worthy of attention and which will prove to be just hype?

These are some of the questions most often asked by healthcare professionals and industry experts. In the 2022-23 update of The Top 20 Digital Health Trends For The Near Future we highlighted 20 developments likely to happen in the upcoming 2-5 years.

“Based on a single existing chest X-ray image, our deep learning model predicts future major adverse cardiovascular events with similar performance and incremental value to the established clinical standard.”

We should celebrate such findings that can: 1) ease the pressure on the healthcare workforce, and 2) provide better patient health predictions so we can act in time.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT?

The current medical task of calculating atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease based on a bunch of health data from patients is a data-based AND repetitive task that could and should be automated.

What is asynchronous telemedicine? In a nutshell, it's when you share data, questions, or medical records, but there is no live communication.

It can come in various forms, like forwarding a recorded video or audio message to a health practitioner for analysis and examination or sending a recorded health history to a specialist. Text messages and e-mails all belong to this category.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT?

The question is not whether it will come, but how we make the most of it.

"New research presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2022, found that AFib screening using conventional smartphones more than doubles the detection and treatment rate in older people, compared to routine screening."

As another good sign, digital screening was well-received by older participants, who tended to perform more measurements than younger participants in the study.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT?

Finally, a study compares the potential of digital health devices for large-scale AFib screening with conventional screening. Only such studies can lead to the implementation of these smart technologies into the practice of medicine.
