Amazon, CVS, Optum, Walgreens, Walmart: Which disruptors have the most clinics unknown

Amazon, CVS, Optum, Walgreens and Walmart are all aiming to shift primary care in America, through increased access, virtual care and a focus on value-based care.

In a February report, the American Hospital Association cited these five companies as the biggest ones "transforming primary care," recommending that hospitals and health systems look for partnership opportunities.

Here are how many brick-and-mortar healthcare clinics each of these disruptors has, according to data they gave Becker's or from their websites or financial statements:

1. Optum: 2,000 primary and specialty care offices in 16 states.

2. CVS: 1,100 MinuteClinic locations in 36 states and Washington, D.C. (with an agreement in place to add Oak Street Health's more than 130 primary care clinics aimed at older adults across 20 states).

3. Walgreens: 680 VillageMD locations, including 200 clinics co-located with Walgreens, across 26 markets (as well as 170 third-party clinics at its stores).

4. Amazon: 221 One Medical primary care offices in more than 20 markets.

5. Walmart: 32 Walmart Health centers across five states (with plans to open 45 more by the end of 2024 in two new states).
